Powdered Alcohol
There's a new product being sold on the internet and it's creating quite a stir in Europe. A German company called subyou ( www.subyou.de) has managed to manufacture Alcohol (the drinking variety) in powdered format (see pic) which it sells over the internet.
This is how they make it:
The powder contains approximately 30% alcohol by dry weight, and is said to maintain a high degree of the original flavor of the alcohol solution. It is available in such flavors as brandy, rum, whiskey, red wine, white win, and vodka. -- According to the manufacturer, the powder is produced in the following way. A solution of water and alcohol is mixed with maltodextrin and then spray-dried at relatively low temperatures. Each molecule of alcohol is encapsulated by dextrin during the spray-drying process and the smaller water molecules are allowed to pass through the surface and evaporate. There is about a 5% loss of alcohol on the surface of each droplet.
It's of course very popular with teenagers who are under the legal drinking age. It packs quite a wallop according to consumer protection officials in Germany, the powder inside contains alcohol, and a lot of it -- about 4.8 percent by volume. That is the equivalent of one to one-and-a-half glasses of liquor.
Concerns in Europe are that internet sales are conducted without the usual controls which of course attracts the intended target audience under the legal drinking age:
The product is called subyou, manufactured by a company in North Rhine-Westphalia, and is marketed squarely at teenagers with slogans like "taste for not much dough" and "gets a good buzz going."
Add the powder to cold water, and consumers have an alcoholic drink containing either vodka or rum. "These are just as dangerous as the alcopops that came in the bottles," Birgit Rehlender, nutrition expert at consumer affairs organization Stiftung Warentest told Der Spiegel weekly.
The company has not hidden the fact that it target's the teenage crowd as you can see for yourself on the website

I wonder how it tastes dry?

Who'd ever think snorting could get you drunk?
Nah, I'm cool. I don't care for railing E, so I'm sure I'd feel the same way about my alcohol....

Dam, thats crazy, but cool at the same time. I might just order some of that, for real. And if I do, I'll let you all know how it is. But if one of you orders it first, then let me know how it is.
cheers,
Russell

my thoughts exactly.
edited to add: i do not expect anyone to die from it from the get go. as with any substance, i suppose that it would take copiuos amounts and repeated abuse of the said substance in order for a lethal outcome to happen.

i'm wondering where they came up with the percentage of alc to be 30%. Booze is percentaged alcohol to water, based on volume... since this is a solid form, that means it would be instead based on a system of weight, so you would compare it to a certain weight of liquid....
hmmm.. this might be more potent than they say.

I actually tried to buy it. |

I actually tried to buy it.
The website is in German so you have to translate the price of the product, (In this case a variety pack) including shipping and handling came to:
BestellungArtikel Anzahl Einzelpreis Gesamtpreis
Probierkarton 1 29,85 EUR 29,85 EUR
Verpackungs- und Versandkosten 3,80 EUR
Summe 33,65 EUR
33,65 Euros = 40,780435 U.S. dollars
which $40 is worth trying them for. Problem is they only ship inside Germany....

Jager........
Powdered jager. I can anly imagine all the uses. This stuff would definitely be benificial for camping/hiking. Much easier to transport; wouldn't need to worry about broken bottles. I think freeze-dried booze is extremely marketable.

Its the first thing I thought of. I spend over 3 months a year in the backcountry. If there was a way to have a drink on day 20 of a 25 day trip...fucking great.

i think montley crew or some group from that era was known to shoot up whiskey. kinda trippy, i guess it hits you instantly, and gets you alot more drunk than drinking some.
