FEATURED THURSDAY:
APRIL 7th, 2005: INHABITANTS ( live electro-jazz, Vancouver Ca), OBELUS UNPLUGGED (live electronic duo, SEA), TEMPERED STEEL (experimental thumb piano, SEA) http://staticfactory.org/basskamp/BasskampApril.jpg BASSKAMP Electronic & Experimental music to expand your mind When: Thursday Nights 9pm – 2am Where: CHAC Lower Level 1621 12th Avenue, Seattle Door: $5 / $4 Members 21+ w/ID Specials: $1 Rainier BASSKAMP is an evening of 21st Century music highlighting Seattle's underground community of electronic and experimental musicians. Hosted by Obelus, a Seattle-based live electronic duo, BASSKAMP explores atmospheric and ambient soundscapes with DJs, live acoustic, laptop composition and free-improvisation. With an impressive lineup of local musicians, BASSKAMP extends from adventurous, sample-based freeform, live beats and sound sculpting to acoustic abstract and free jazz. BASSKAMP features members of Fourthcity, Now Device, Decibel Festival, Bass Kamp Records, and Bloc Records. INHABITANTS live electro-jazz, Vancouver Ca Early 70s electro jazz - Miles Davis meets Godspeed You Black Emperor! OBELUS UNPLUGGED live electronic duo, SEA Obelus is the Seattle based live electronica duo of Adam Pessl and Jason Goessl. Played through the traditional instrumentation of guitar and drums, Obelus takes these familiar sounds through a matrix of samplers, effects, and sequencers to recombine them into an eclectic mix of tempos, textures, and moods. These live electronic collages are best described as lush ambient synthesizer and bass driven loops propelled by complex rythmic progressions that take the listener on a sonic escape to the untempered regions of musical imagination. www.obelus.net TEMPERED STEEL experimental thumb piano, SEA Tempered Steel is an experimental thumb piano ensemble featuring Ffej, Frank Junk and Dennis Rea. These three veteran sound artists improvise on traditional African instruments, using them as raw sound sources composed of metal and wood. Combining them with a variety of electronic effects, the resulting music ranges from dense polyrythms to lush soundscapes. It's a beautiful noise, evoking our primal instincts of the past while turning an ear to our evolved future. From Last Week's Stranger Issue:
THURSDAY MARCH 31 BASSKAMP: BOOKMOBILE, OBELUS Obelus (Jason Goessl and Adam Pessl) rank among of the city's most versatile musicians, using guitar and drums to trigger an encyclopedic range of electronic sounds for your dancing and pondering pleasure. No two Obelus shows are alike, because they favor spontaneity over rigid planning--and, to paraphrase Miles Davis regarding their formidable chops, "They're motherfuckers." As I've blathered here many times before, Bookmobile (Victor Couto and Ben Torrence) put a quirky spring in IDM's step, giving the decrepit genre more bounce to the ounce than most of their better-known peers. Come hear what I've been frothing about these past few months, would ya? CHAC (Lower Level), 1621 12th St, 388-0521, 9 pm-2 am, 21+, $4/$3 members. Thanks Dave Segal! |
And in this week's Stranger...
THURSDAY APRIL 7 BASSKAMP: INHABITANTS, OBELUS (CHAC Lower Level) Vancouver quartet Inhabitants eke out woozy jazztronica for people still mourning Miles Davis' 1991 death (I know I'm still reeling). Play the group's self-titled disc in your portable music device, go for a long walk, and instantly be transported to a late-night, romantic underworld where the jukebox is loaded with early-'70s ECM titles, everybody's wearing stylish hats, and hearts are melting like globally warmed icebergs. The blissful yet dissonant ambience and lightly shuffling grooves these young cats create may also induce chills in folks with lots of titles from the Constellation and Thrill Jockey labels in their collections.
